In the spiritual journey, one of the most pervasive illusions is that of time. We often live as though time is something that happens to us - something we must catch up with, struggle against, or organise. But time, as we understand it, is a concept that has no inherent reality. It is an abstract idea, a product of the mind, used to measure events, but not to define existence.
When we focus on the past or the future, we trap ourselves in an illusion. We constantly reflect on what has happened or worry about what may come, and in doing so, we miss the only moment that truly exists - the present moment. The reality is, time is an idea constructed by the mind to create a sense of order in an otherwise timeless experience.
The Past: A Memory, Not a Reality
The past is nothing more than a collection of memories and stories we’ve accumulated over time. These memories are not the direct experience of what happened - they are coloured by our perceptions, beliefs, and emotions. We relive these stories, over and over, but the actual events no longer exist. They are gone.
Living in the past means living in a constant state of nostalgia, regret, or attachment. We try to recreate moments or hold on to things that are already gone. The past can never be recovered, yet we carry it with us as if it’s still alive, still influencing our present moment.
But the truth is, the past has no power over the present, unless we choose to let it. When we release our attachment to it, we free ourselves to experience life as it is, without the distortion of old stories.
The Future: A Projection, Not a Certainty
Similarly, the future is a projection of the mind. It is an imagined landscape, shaped by our hopes, fears, and desires. We plan, we speculate, we anticipate. But the future is always a mystery, and no matter how much we try to predict or control it, it is always unfolding beyond our grasp.
Living in the future creates anxiety and expectation. We wait for something outside ourselves to happen before we can feel complete, fulfilled, or content. But this moment, the present, is the only moment that is real. The future will eventually become the present, but by the time it does, it will have already passed.
The Present: The Only Reality
The present is the only time that truly exists. In this moment, there is no past and no future. There is only now. But for many of us, this truth is elusive. We spend our days lost in thoughts of what was or what might be, while the present slips through our fingers.
When we awaken to the present moment, we begin to realise that all the peace, joy, and contentment we seek is already here. The past and future are just stories we tell ourselves. When we stop identifying with them, we are free to experience life as it truly is, without the weight of time bearing down on us.
Living Beyond Time
Living beyond time does not mean rejecting the world or becoming passive. It means engaging with life fully, without the filters of past experience or future expectation. It means embracing the present moment as the only moment that truly matters.
In this timeless space, we find that we are not bound by the limitations of the clock. We realise that time is not something we need to control or manage. It is simply a reflection of the mind’s attempt to create structure in a world that is inherently boundless.
When we let go of the illusion of time, we step into the infinite now. We allow ourselves to be fully present, and in that presence, we find the peace, joy, and fulfilment we have been searching for all along.
